Under the watchful eyes of members of Hopewell Hose Fire Company, a fire was started and Post members, Scouts and bystanders were invited to take flags from a large pile and place them in the fire pit. They were also suggested to honor a friend or loved one as they placed their flags in the fire. When all the flags had been retired, the firemen put out any remaining flames and the pit was covered.
