Boys' State Girls' State 2019 Report

Thank You Notes (Girls' State)

The Post's Girls' State attendee, Katelyn Albert, sent a feedback letter to the Dutchess County American Legion Auxiliary (DCALA) thanking the Post for its support. The Girls' State/Nation program is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, but since our post currently has no Auxiliary, we elected to sponsor a girl for the program in addition to a boy for Boys' State.

From the Post's April Meeting Minutes

Don Burns advised that Post 1758’s candidate, Patrick Cullen, was on track to submit his paperwork and meet the County-level deadline of April 12th.

From the Post's April Newsletter

Paper work and checks have been submitted for our two candidates. Representing our Post at Girls State will be Kaitlin Albert from Roy C. Ketcham. And Patrick Cullen from John Jay will represent us at Boys State.

From the March 12 Membership Meeting

Boys'/Girls' State: Lance, Jim, and Don recruited frank Steinbuch of the Wappingers Post to assist with that post (#447) in sponsoring candidates from Roy C. Ketcham, including both boys and girls. [Post 1758 agreed to pay for at least 1 girl from RCKHS to attend Girls State 2019.] Post 1758's runner-up candidate for Boys State will be sponsored by Beacon Post. Don showcased a prototype booklet describing the Post's Youth programs.

From the Mar. 5 Executive Board Meeting

Boys'/Girls' State: Lance and Don briefed the Executive Officers on the names of brand new candidates, both boys and girls, that were supplied by Roy C. Ketcham H.S. which was unexpected. Through discussion, Lance and Don formulated a plan of action involving the following:

  • Lance will caIl Frank Steinbuch of the Wappingers Post to determine whether the same is interested in sponsoring candidates from Roy C. Ketcham (as was preliminarily discussed at the St. Patrick's Parade the weekend prior)
  • Don/lance witl inform Patrick Cullen that he has been selected as the Post's candidate for Boys' State and, pending mike Davey's response (above), inform Osbourne Owen of Beacon Post's willingness to sponsor him.

NY Assembly Colleagues Call for Boys State Funding in State Budget

Assemblyman Clifford W. Crouch (R-Bainbridge) joined his colleagues in the Assembly Minority last week in sending a letter to the governor and legislative leaders calling for $150,000 for the American Legion Boys State program in the final state budget. The American Legion Boys State is a week-long program held at SUNY Morrisville that takes rising high school seniors and gives them first-class citizenship and leadership training. Students are exposed to government operations in New York, physical fitness, teamwork and other activities, under the guidance of American Legion counselors and active duty Marines.

From the March Newsletter

We've had several inquiries about the Boys'State and Girls'State Programs this year. Two excellent candidates from John Jay High School were interviewed by Don Burns and Lance Ashworth for Boys'State. At the February County meeting Beacon Post 203 agreed to sponsor one of these young menfor us. They will be supporting Osborne Owen and our post will send Patrick Cullen. We've also been working with Wappinger's Post 427 to transfer more responsibility for Roy C Ketcham High School students to them. They are currently processing applicants for both programs and we've agreed to sponsor their 2nd best candidate for Girls'State this year. The cost of sending each student is $450.00 and as much as we would like to send everyone who is interested, our post cannot afford it. We appreciate Beacon's assistance this year so two boys from John Jay can attend Boys'State. Going forward Post 427 will be working with Roy C. Ketcham and we will work with John Jay.
